Postcards to Friends/Family ? One of the easiest and most productive marketing concepts is to identify your core group of friends and business relations. Make a list of 100 people that might be interested in your new business venture then send a quick postcard to each one. At first, you?re not trying to sell anything, you just want to let everyone know you begun a new business. Then, when you come into contact with these people over the next few weeks you can follow up. Asking ?Did you get my postcard last week?? is a great way to follow up without sounding pushy.

Flyers ? Perhaps you?ve seen pamphlets or flyers at the local supermarket or retail store. Most of these advertise vehicles or other items for sales. But, I?ve had some success by creating flyers with tear-off ?discount? stickers that can be used when booking one of my parties. For instance, create a flyer with 10 tear-off tabs offering 10% off the purchase of any item. Many people are enticed by these discount offers.

Business Cards ? There are still a few situations where the handing out of business cards can be a great way to supplement your business. If you?re like most people you probably meet a lot of people during the week with which you?re unfamiliar. Waiters and waitresses, retail store employees, fast food workers, and other people of a similar job responsibility are excellent sources for both business leads and potential recruiting efforts. Why are these people such great leads?

1. Business Leads ? These people often come into contact with thousands of individuals during the day. If you were able to strike up a friendship you might be able to use your new friend as a potential recruiting tool for your business. Have him or her hand out your business cards to customers they?re friendly with. Or, just place a table-top card holder next to the register and let the customers help themselves.

2. Recruiting ? Many people in the food and retail industry enjoy working with people and are often looking for ways to make a little extra money. This is because, unfortunately, the reimbursement rate for their services rarely matches their amount of work and responsibility. Suggest that the individual call you to discuss how they could increase their monthly income or possibly even replace their current job.

Remember, every person you come into contact with is a potential client or recruit. Hand out your business cards as if they were tickets to future success and sell the opportunity with your confidence. In no time, your phone will be ringing off the hook with interested people.

As you can see, it takes time to build a profitable marketing program. However, by using the methods I?ve provided I?m certain that you?ll have a successful direct sales business in no time.

An article appearing in the January/February issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal suggests that patients considering elective breast surgery would gain ultimately improved results after being assessed for breast cancer risk. The article also provides guidelines for plastic surgeons to help women determine breast cancer risk, as well as the most successful options for surgical intervention and breast reconstruction.

There are many risk factors associated with breast cancer, family history probably being the most prevalent. Although these risk factors don?t always mean any woman can or cannot get diagnosed with breast cancer. Estimates predict one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. That is why it is so important to have regular screenings, either using MRI or mammography to detect the presence of breast cancer, and even genetic testing to determine the risk of developing breast cancer in the future.

?Genetic testing, such as that for BRCA1 and BRCA2 (genes associated with breast cancer), has allowed clinicians to better tailor risk management strategies in patients from families with hereditary breast cancer,? said Hooman Soltanian, MD, lead author of the piece. ?Plastic surgeons are in a unique position to provide early preventative options to their patients.?

In Phoenix cosmetic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Leber, who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and board certified for the American Board of Plastic Surgery also stresses the importance of breast implant safety education especially amongst those at risk for breast cancer.

Early intervention with particularly high risk women can mean they can choose from more surgical and reconstructive procedures. Also, reconstructive surgery and aesthetic plastic surgery of the breasts, such as Phoenix breast lift surgery (Mastopexy) if done at the same time, can also optimize the cosmetic results.

? Every woman 40 years of age and older should have a mammogram prior to an elective breast procedure. Some even recommend a preoperative mammogram in all women undergoing cosmetic breast surgery.

? It is important to note that breast augmentation, reduction, mastopexy (breast lift) and implants may have significant consequences in screening and surveillance of breast cancer, specifically with regard to future mammographic evaluation. A new mammogram should be obtained three-to-six months after surgery, to serve as the new baseline for evaluation.

? Ultrasound studies and MRI may be used to further evaluate patients with difficult or unsatisfactory mammograms.

So anyway, the story is that during Journalism, we had a practice run of the Capture the Flag tournament thing we?re hosting tomorrow. It?s a fundraiser and people are being really difficult and Jewish and we don?t even know if it?s happening anymore.

But anyway. I?m out of shape. Even for me. I need super lungs. I?m going to get surgery and have a special backpack that holds my extra lungs. And my seven hearts. Maybe I?ll just be a cyborg or something. Crap.

Remember singing that song when you were a kid? I do, as there weren?t many fun things to do at home in the summer when it rained. And playing out in the summer rain like my kids love to do wasn?t an option for me and my siblings.?I?don?t want to jinx myself (or anyone else)?by writing this, but?I think the time has come to ask for a little less rain. Yes, I know, I said it!

See, here in Birmingham, Alabama, we?ve had an afternoon thundershower every day for the past 10 days. My trees, grass, shrubs, and flower garden love it. Most of my my veggie and herb garden loves it, too. But, my tomatoes are saying, ?Enough already!?

Summer heat dries up the fruit and then loads of water fill it back up. These fluctuations in water cause the fruit to split and crack. Some tomato varieties handle this better than others. Mountain Pride, Roma Grape (Juliet), and Arkansas Traveler are a few that resist cracking. But with this much rain, most any tomato would get a crack here or there.?The foliage on the tomato plants doesn?t like getting too wet either. That doesn?t mean the tomatoes aren?t still delicious, but it does mean some plants look worse than others.

Don?t get me wrong, I love summer rain?the thunderstorms bring us indoors in the late afternoon and bring our family to the table for a fun board game?and a pot of English tea.?But, yesterday, I had a beautiful bunch of yellow cherry heirloom tomatoes that were?not quite ready to pick. I needed one more day and they would be just right. As the dark clouds rolled in, though, I decided not to take a chance. My little eight-year-old, Harriette, ran?down to the garden and helped me fill our basket right before the?clouds let loose. We?picked those cherry tomatoes and mixed them with sweet red cherry and yellow peppers and cucumbers.?All the vegetables were rich in color and bursting with flavor. Everything turned out all right.

The rain has made our limelight hydrangeas enormous. And the foliage on the trees are a rich shade of green. I hope this will makes for better colors in the fall.?In the past, we?ve had droughts that make the forest seem lifeless, so I guess, in the end, maybe the look of my tomatoes is worth all the other payoffs, especially since they still taste so good!
